The great thing with London, is that when you think you have seen everything, a new thing pops up! Whether that is a new Restaurant, Gallery or Food Market.
Mercato Metropolitao is an italian food market that has just opened in Elephant and Castle, a mere stone’s throw away from the wonderful Borough Market.
This is the third market of theirs to open, the others being in Milan and Turin.
The area is split into 3 sections. An indoor food hall, an outdoor seating area with popup vans/stalls and an italian supermarket.
The food hall has italian food covered. From gelato to fresh pasta to wood fired pizzas, cured meats and even an enoteca..
You’d be hard to find a wine you didn’t like in this enoteca.
The gnocci chips were an interesting find, kind of like ‘crispy clouds’.
I settled on trying an italian cheese selection first.
A mini Ricotta, a Salmon Stracciatella and a Melanzane Caprese.
They were all lovely, but the salmon was the winner!
Next stop, Pizza…
A beautiful, freshly made woodfired pizza. You don’t need me to tell you that this is as good as it gets.
But it DOES get better…
Onward to the Gelato.
I went for the Buontalenti. Which is a cream flavour (No Vanilla or extra flavourings).
Hands down, the BEST gelato i have ever had!
I do not use this term lightly!
The supermarket delights were amazing! Great for eat in or takeaway nibbles with friends. (with a catch up and bottle of wine of course!).
With the help of one of the friendly assistants, i was recommended a wine for me to try (i actually tried a few!) then happily wandered around the shop drinking it.
(I didn’t carry a watermelon).
Classes on cooking and baking are also planned which i will definitely be keeping my eye out for!
This is a great place to bring friends and family and makes a change from the pub. I’l certainly be back buying coffee/wine/pizza… and more gelato (also sold by the tub)!
Visit the website here and they can be found at 42 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6DR.
